Sally Flocks is the President & CEO of PEDS, a member-based advocacy organization dedicated to making metro Atlanta safe and accessible for all pedestrians. Sally founded PEDS in 1996 after brain surgery controlled a seizure disorder that had prevented her from driving most of her adult life. Starting as a history teacher at Georgia Tech, Sally has a lot of experience teaching new subjects to traffic engineers. Her efforts at PEDS have lead to high-visibility crosswalk markings, legislation authorizing communities to use camera systems to ticket red light runners, the publication of a state pedestrian facilities design guidebook, the installation of in-street crosswalk signs in Decatur and Atlanta, a joint state-federal study of rising pedestrian fatality rates in metro Atlanta, increased fines for parking on sidewalks, and grants to the DeKalb County and City of Atlanta police for pedestrian law enforcement. Sally also serves on the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Bicycle-Pedestrian Task Force, the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and Mayor Franklin’s Walkable Atlanta Task Force.
