Carter Headrick is a State Advocacy Consultant for the American Heart Association specializing in issues and legislation relating to tobacco, obesity and environmental causes of cardiovascular disease and stroke. In this role Mr. Headrick works with American Heart Association staff in all 50 states to pass and implement policies to prevent and reduce tobacco use, promote healthy eating, physical activity and reduce exposure to environmental causes of heart disease and stroke.
Prior to joining the American Heart Association, Mr. Headrick developed an expertise in tobacco prevention and cessation policy during eleven years working at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a privately funded organization established to focus the nation’s attention and action on reducing tobacco use among children.
During his time at Tobacco-Free Kids, Mr. Headrick built a national group of over 400,000 grassroots activists who worked to counter the tobacco industry and advocate for policy change at the federal, state and local levels of government.
Mr. Headrick also served three years as a regional advocacy representative for the Campaign. In that position, Mr. Headrick worked with tobacco prevention coalitions in 36 states, providing technical assistance and information in the following areas:
- The establishment of statewide programs to reduce tobacco use.
- Measures to limit kids’ access to tobacco products.
- Restrictions on the tobacco industry’s ability to market their product to children.
- Strategies to de-normalize tobacco use.
- The use of price increases as a tool to reduce tobacco use.
Mr. Headrick has been a featured speaker at dozens of local, state, national and international conferences regarding strategies for reducing tobacco use. He is also frequently invited to speak at public affairs conferences about best practices for grassroots organizing and volunteer motivation. In 2005 he co-chaired the successful Innovate to Motivate National Conference for Political Involvement Professionals.
Mr. Headrick began his public health career when he co-managed an effort in Washington State to eliminate tobacco billboards in the most populous county in the Puget Sound region.
In addition to his public health work, Mr. Headrick has managed political campaigns in 3 states. He is also a radio broadcast veteran having worked seven years as an announcer, producer, and news reporter.
Mr. Headrick received his B.A. from Minnesota State University at Moorhead and lives with his family in Lone Tree, Colorado.
