David Levinger, Director of Research, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, is a both an engineer and a political anthropologist of transportation & planning, with expertise in creating healthy, sustainable communities. He has worked professionally in the spectrum of transportation modes — from aviation, transit, and driver training to pedestrians, bicycles and street design. He has over 20 years of research, policy analysis, engineering and program management experience in the business, advocacy and education sectors. His eye toward culture, organizations, and complex systems enables him to understand and develop opportunities for graceful change and innovation. He has served on advisory boards and multi-disciplinary, collaborative research teams related to health, land use and transportation planning at the city, state, and federal level. Levinger is a member of the Transportation Research Board Pedestrians Committee and Transportation Safety Planning Working Group. He is Affiliate Associate Professor of Urban Design & Planning at the University of Washington.
