America Walks Statement on November 2016 Election

At America Walks, we work at the local, state and federal level to achieve our goal of creating safe, accessible and enjoyable walkable spaces for every community member. The 2016 election provided America Walks with opportunities to engage with new partners on the issues related to walking and walkability, inform advocates from across the country on work being done in their communities, and to plan for a future where every individual has the right to walk.

We were inspired to see so many ballot initiatives at the local and state level for measures supporting policies related to active transportation, improved transit networks and other issues that help promote a walkable America. Our partners at the Center for Transportation Excellence have put together a great overview of what passed and lessons that can be learned from this election cycle. We encourage you to take a look at the work being done across the United States and look forward to working with our advocates to make sure there are even more successful ballot initiatives in future election cycles.

At the federal level, we have been hard at work preparing recommendations and information for the next administration. As a member of the Partnership for Active Transportation, we have helped to put together policy recommendations to promote and protect active transportation in the new administration. We will continue to work with our partners and coalitions to make sure that walking and walkability play a critical role in transportation for America’s future.

One thing that the 2016 election did not change, however, was our mission to make sure every community member has the right to safe, accessible and enjoyable places to walk and be active. We know that walking provides an important transportation alternative to access education, jobs, healthcare and opportunities to play and engage with one another. Our commitment, to advocates and to communities across the US, to protect and promote walkable communities remains as strong as ever.
