Building Local Capacity for Change

America Walks’ Technical Assistance (T.A.) program has been designed to cultivate broad public support for walkable design, and provide leaders with the information they need to make the case for policy. We are the “go-to” source for building the local capacity to create change.

The following standard T.A. services and products can be customized for any community:

  • Community WALKshop: All-day workshop for community members and professionals, which combines best practices in starting a walking program with guidance on public policy and street design
  • Walk Audit Training: Step-by-step instructions for planning, marketing, and leading a community walk audit – the most powerful strategy for getting your local walking movement started
  • Vision Zero Policy Development: Community planning process, which starts with a statement that traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable and ethically unacceptable, and ends with a Vision Zero safety goal
  • Tactical Urbanism: Hands-on experience in designing and implementing a low-cost ‘pop-up’ demonstration project, which engages residents in neighborhood safety and leads to permanent change

State Walking College Program

The State Walking College Program is a new T.A. service for State Health Departments and other organizations who wish to build the capacity of walking and walkability advocates and professionals across their state. It is based on the Walking College – America Walks’ interactive, online educational program for walkable community advocates, which was launched in 2015.

To learn more about the actual walkable community outcomes achieved by Walking College Fellows, check out our report, Building the Local Capacity of the National Walking Movement: Outcomes from the First Two Years of the Walking College.”

America Walks has helped establish two State Walking College Programs. In 2017, we worked with the Iowa Healthier State Initiative and other partners to launch the Iowa State Walking College. And the New York State Walking College will take place for the first time in 2019 through a Technical Assistance service agreement with the New York State Department of Health.

Contact Ian Thomas to discuss the opportunities for your state host its own State Walking College.
