How can we reach more people and convince them of the benefits of inclusive and accessible walkable communities? We have incredible data on how they improve health, the climate, the economy, and our quality of life – but data alone often doesn’t carry the day.
We’ve put together a panel of creative and experienced communicators to share their ideas about how to cut through the clutter and move people to action. Tom Flood, bringing car advertising experience to street safety, Marian Huhman to present research results on language that works , and Jorge Canez (Peatonito) creative earned media expert and filmmaker.
Moderated by our Executive Director, Mike McGinn – advocate, campaigner, and former elected official. Join us for presentations and conversation about tapping into the emotional core of successful advocacy.
About our Panelists:
Born and raised in the chaotic capital city of Mexico this masked “luchador” (wrestler) is a pedestrian activist superhero. Peatónito used to be a normal citizen with a normal job until one day he decided to fight for the rights of the walkers. This idea came to this young man when he went to the “lucha libre” arena, the Mexicans’ favorite spectacle, where the magic of the traditional wrestling matches happens. The next day he brought the fight from the arena to the streets.
The goal: to build a city for the people and not for the cars. His superpowers: pushing backward automobiles that invade the pedestrian crosswalks, painting zebra crossings at dangerous intersections, walking across the tops of cars parked on sidewalks, helping vulnerable people to cross the street, and reporting pedestrian obstacles to the authorities.
Nowadays he is an expert on the subject of walkability and acts as a social adviser to governments all around Mexico. This vigilante of the streets loves to participate in tactical urbanism interventions that he calls “walking urban guerrillas”. In addition, this fearless activist has given talks preaching the Pedestrian Revolution all around Mexico, the United States, and Latin America. Besides all that, this pedestrian champion is the defense in a football team with his friends, he plays the bass guitar in a punk rock band and one day he would love to travel all around the world by bicycle. Let’s bring it on for the Mexican walking champ and ¡Viva la Pedestrian Revolution!
Before coming to UIUC, DR. Huhman was a researcher and evaluator of health campaigns at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) where she led the outcome evaluation of VERB. It’s what you do!, a national social marketing initiative to increase physical activity among tweens. At UIUC, Dr. Huhman taught and conducted research and evaluation of social marketing and media campaigns.
While retired from the University of Illinois, Dr. Huhman has consulted on projects such as the one we are talking about in the webinar—how to communicate about physical activity and physical activity initiatives to the public and to policy makers.
