Here are some of the latest Walkability Wins — because safe streets aren’t up for debate!
Update: Walkability Wins will be moving to every other month. We encourage you to send your community’s “wins” as they happen to social@americawalks.org!
Brattleboro, Vermont
Two bridges that connect downtown Brattleboro, Vermont, with Hinsdale, New Hampshire, and with Island Park in the middle of the Connecticut River, will re-open to people for walking, bicycling, and relaxing. The rehab is projected to finish by 2029.
Thank you to Eesha for this fantastic win!
Columbia, South Carolina
In Columbia, South Carolina, work will soon be underway to extend Williams Street — to include separated bike lanes, bike-share stations, and tree-lined sidewalks — to provide more direct access along the Congaree River’s edge. The project is part of a larger plan to transform the waterfront into a walkable destination with an accessible park and trails, as well as space for development.
Thank you to Jason for this fantastic win!
New Haven, Connecticut
The New Haven Board of Alders unanimously passed “Downtown For All,” a proposal that makes sweeping changes to downtown zoning. This reform will make it easier to build diverse, mixed-income housing and denser downtown development in New Haven.
South Dakota
Recently, the South Dakota Transportation Commission awarded 16 sidewalk, trail, and shared-use path Transportation Alternatives (TA) projects — led by recipients including cities, the Harrisburg School District, and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe — with grants totaling approximately $9.5 million.
The TA program uses federal transportation funds for specific projects that enhance the inter-modal transportation system and provide safe alternative transportation options, encompassing smaller-scale non-motorized transportation projects such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, safe routes to school projects, recreational trails, and more.
