DEADLINE EXTENDED! Walking College is Accepting Applications

The Walking College fellowship, a program of the nonprofit America Walks to strengthen grassroots advocacy for safer, more accessible streets, is now accepting applications for the 2022 fellowship class.

The Walking College is a leadership program which is open to anyone looking to hone their skills and knowledge around improving the built and policy environments to achieve greater livability and access.

In this sixth year of the program, we are seeking 35 Walking College fellows who see opportunities for making their communities healthier and safer, and also more just, vibrant, and sustainable, and who want to be part of bringing about transformative change.

The Walking College is a six-month, distance-learning fellowship.

Participants, paired with experienced leaders in the field and peers working in similar capacities across North America, learn about the historical underpinnings of the transportation landscape, the basics of people-first design and policy, and develop essential organizing and leadership skills. Over the course of the program, they also develop a blueprint for taking action on a particular problem in their community.

Previous fellows have worked to implement Complete Streets policies; developed walking school bus programs to promote non-motorized travel to school; created safe-streets awareness campaigns; used the arts to make their communities more people-friendly; and conducted comprehensive audits of their surroundings to aid in prioritizing improvements.

“The Walking College experience empowers would-be change-makers to understand the connections between the built and policy environments and the pressing challenges of our day,” said Walking College Program Manager Emilie Bahr. “It also encourages them to get involved in meaningful ways to develop creative solutions to these challenges and make a real difference in their communities.”

We welcome all candidates that demonstrate a basic understanding of the importance of walkability and a desire to become more effective in advocating for positive change. There are no restrictions on age or professional background and we actively seek out candidates with a diversity of life experiences.
