How to Apply to the Walking College
Fellowships are awarded in late March. Course modules run from late April through mid-September with an in-person gathering typically scheduled for late September.
Each application cycle, we look for a crop of candidates that demonstrates a basic understanding of the importance of walkability and a desire to become more effective in pushing for positive change. We do not put any restrictions on age or professional background and we actively seek out candidates that represent a diversity of life experience and who can bring new perspectives to bear on this important issue. Roughly 25 fellowships are awarded each year.
We look for candidates who demonstrate an interest and some degree of involvement in helping to improve the walkability of their communities, but who are not necessarily formally trained in walkable design or policy.
If accepted, fellows are expected to pay a $100 registration fee, though exceptions are made in the case of demonstrated financial hardship. They are also expected to commit to spending 5-10 hours each week on the fellowship, attending all group and mentoring sessions and to complete a Walking Action Plan by the close of the program.
