Here are some of the latest Walkability Wins — because safe streets aren’t up for debate!

As a reminder, Walkability Wins has moved to every other month. We encourage you to send your community’s “wins” as they happen to social@americawalks.org!

Kansas City, Missouri

Following crashes in Kansas City that resulted in fatalities and injured children on their way to school, Mayor Quinton Lucas introduced an ordinance to ban right turns on red in school zones. BikeWalkKC—along with testimony from Community Transportation Academy participant Russell Dorn—supported the measure and successfully advocated for additional language to improve school zone designation policies.

Thank you to Liz for this fantastic win!

Bowling Green, Kentucky

Quick-build projects in Bowling Green, Kentucky, are demonstrating the power of re-envisioning streets for walkability. With local planning organization members, community volunteers, and others, the City championed these quick builds to address road safety challenges at two intersections by creating curb cuts and crosswalks, ensuring ADA compliance for those using mobility devices, and installing a bump-out featuring striping and traffic delineators.

Thank you to Carroll for this fantastic win!

El Paso, Texas

The City of El Paso has created more than 1,000 miles of new cycling facilities since launching its Comprehensive Bike Plan in 2016. The City also recently hosted a community meeting to gather public input on updates to the plan and how to make El Paso safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Pennsylvania

In May, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation awarded over $74 million to 72 projects in 38 counties to build pedestrian and bicycle facilities, create safe routes to school, improve access to public transportation, create trail projects, and improve safety for vulnerable travelers. The projects are funded as part of the 2025 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside of the Federal Highway Administration’s Surface Block Grant Program.
