The Safe Systems Pyramid: Treating Traffic Deaths Like an Epidemic
Maybe you are familiar with the Safe Systems approach. But does it sufficiently prioritize what’s important?
The Safe Systems Pyramid is an updated approach to traffic safety that takes established epidemiological approaches to identify the cause of death and injury (spoiler alert – it is the speed, shape, and mass of vehicles) and how to interrupt its spread. Thus, the Safe Systems Pyramid takes a more focused approach to traffic safety than the Safe Systems Approach, and helps avoid a false equivalence between engineering, education and enforcement. A broad spectrum of safety professionals and advocates are urging transportation agencies to formally adopt the Safe Systems Pyramid.
Our panelists are Dr. Dave Ederer of the CDC, who developed the Pyramid, and Steph Leonard, who partners across state agencies in Colorado to implement the pyramid.
