A New Video Resource for Professionals and Advocates

Our popular live monthly webinars can’t possibly accommodate all the content relevant to advancing walkability. So we are launching an on-demand video series that we are calling “The Technical Series”.  Pre-recorded with leading professionals, our vision is to present topics that allow a deeper dive into the details of policies, implementation or best practices.  Our goal is to help advance the knowledge of practitioners in the field, while simultaneously de-mystifying topics for community advocates.

So what are we talking about?  Here are our first four technical series webinars:

Understanding the New Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)

Presented by Matthew Roe, Senior Associate, Mobility Planning & Design at Stantec and former Technical Lead at NACTO, and Mike McGinn, Executive Director at America Walks

At America Walks we call the MUTCD “the most important pedestrian safety document you have never heard of.” But actually, if you work on street design as a professional or an advocate it has most certainly come to your attention for how it shapes our local streets. In this two part series, Matthew Roe, formerly Technical Lead at NACTO and now with Stantec, takes us through the significant revisions recently adopted.

Part 1: Understanding the New MUTCD – Speed Limits, Crosswalk Markings & Sidewalk Extensions, Asphalt Art, Signals & Warrants

Part 2: Understanding the New MUTCD – Bike Infrastructure

A Framework for Integrating Land Use and Transportation

Presented by Ian Lockwood, Livable Transportation Engineer at Toole Design, and Mike McGinn, Executive Director at America Walks

Ian Lockwood takes us through his conceptualization of how planners, community members, and leaders can tackle the inherently related topics of land use and transportation. Moving through historical shifts in transportation planning (from ancient cities to the advent of concepts like LOS, VMT, and the Universal Equation), you’ll learn how to plan walkable, equitable, and memorable places.

Mapping High Injury Streets

Presented by Theja Putta, PhD, Analyst III at Toole Design, Sarah Abel, Sustainable Safety Practice Lead at Toole Design and Mike McGinn, Executive Director at America Walks

Learn how to use the Safer Streets Priority Finder, an open source tool to identify the streets in your community that have the highest risk to pedestrians and other street users.

Right now we are offering the technical series webinars for free – all that we ask for is a registration – but we anticipate that we may migrate this to premium content for our members only as we add to the video library.

And if you are a professional interested in working with us to develop additional content, let us know. We hope you enjoy the videos and we are grateful to Toole Design and the National Association of City Transportation Officials for sharing their expertise with us and you!
