Here are some of the latest Walkability Wins — because safe streets aren’t up for debate!

Billings, Montana

Montana’s largest city launched its Downtown Two-Way Restoration Project to improve road safety for all users, encourage multimodal travel, and support local businesses. This effort has been years in the making and is helping car-centric Billings take steps towards walkability!

Shout out to Taylor for this amazing win!

Carrollton, Missouri

My Hometown Carrollton volunteers partnered with the Town of Carrollton and the Carrollton Street Department to paint new red crosswalks around the downtown square. These updated crosswalks will slow down vehicle traffic and improve pedestrian safety in the town’s business district!

Thank you for Kristine for this amazing win!

Denver, Colorado

Denver’s City Council has voted to end parking minimums for new housing projects! This move is intended to encourage more housing development and transportation options for residents who would otherwise drive.

Springfield, Virginia

Fairfax County, Virginia, has announced a Slow Streets pilot project using money allocated from a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant. The project will lower vehicle speeds across a busy, fast-moving road in Springfield, add better signage and other traffic-calming features, and create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and children using school buses.

Hawai’i

Over a dozen projects to help make walking and biking safer for students have been selected to receive assistance from Hawai’i’s eight-million-dollar Safe Routes to School fund. Planned improvements will include crosswalks, sidewalks, curb extensions, and more, which are critical to improving safety in a state where pedestrians and cyclists make up 40 percent of traffic fatalities.
