When faced with urgent challenges, it helps to connect with others, make a thoughtful plan and get busy. And the people that care about walkability – because of what it can do for health, safety, equity, climate and community – are getting busy!
Since we are approaching the end of the year, we thought we would share “America Walks by the Numbers 2023” to give a flavor of what we did to contribute to the movement.
- 8,065 registrants for our educational webinars
- 2700+ comments to USDOT’s proposed rules for new vehicle safety standards.
- 357 elected and agency officials joined our National Week Without Driving to experience the challenges faced by their constituents without cars
- 200 participants in our Rural Walkability Labs
- 142 state and local organizations supported the first ever National Week Without Driving.
- 121 advocates trained through intensive national and state walking colleges
- 100+ Walkability Wins celebrated in our blog series of the same name
- 61 communities received advice and support on winning federal grants through our Intersections Initiative, a joint project with Safe Routes Partnership and the League of American Bicyclists
- 50+ organizations supported that are working to remove freeways or mitigate the damages of freeways through cities

At America Walks, we believe that the work of individuals, small groups and local advocacy organizations adds up to national impact. We provide local advocates with tools to help them succeed – whether that is training on policy and organizing, connections to other advocates, or small grants. We know that once they get started, people often grow in experience, take on bigger challenges, and even run for office themselves. And when we work together, we can be a powerful force for changes in national policy.
We look forward to what we can accomplish together in 2024.
