Hillsborough, North Carolina
The sixth annual Walk Fairview Day in Hillsborough saw youth-led action to bring together their neighborhood and share their vision for a more connected, accessible, and joyful Fairview. Youth in Action interns presented their research and recommendations for the neighborhood, including expanding bus service, improving sports field access, and growing their community garden.
Thank you to Kevin for this fantastic win!
Spartanburg, South Carolina
Spartanburg, South Carolina’s community is showing up to build a safer, more walkable East Main Street. In response to the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s proposed changes to a dangerous four-lane street corridor, residents, led by Walking College alum Liv Hawkins and Strong Towns’ Spartanburg chapter, came together to demand the new bike lanes be parking protected—resulting in them being added to the final plan.
Thank you to Liv for this fantastic win!
Seattle, Washington
Seattle is implementing its Safe Routes to School program through improvements like daylighting intersections, building new sidewalks, longer pedestrian crossing times, and protected bike lane upgrades. These updates are part of the $1.55 billion Seattle Transportation Levy residents approved in 2024.
Boston, Massachusetts
After two years of construction, four-lane Cummins Highway in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood has been transformed into a two-lane complete street. Once part of the city’s “high-crash network,” Cummins Highway now features raised crosswalks, protected bike lanes, better accessibility for wheelchair users, traffic-calming elements, and a roundabout at what used to be a wide, five-way intersection.
