The Safe Systems Pyramid
Maybe you are familiar with the Safe Systems approach. But does it sufficiently prioritize what’s important?
The Safe Systems Pyramid is an updated approach to traffic safety that takes established epidemiological approaches to identify the cause of death and injury (spoiler alert – it is the speed, shape, and mass of vehicles) and how to interrupt its spread. Thus, the Safe Systems Pyramid takes a more focused approach to traffic safety than the Safe Systems Approach, and helps avoid a false equivalence between engineering, education and enforcement. A broad spectrum of safety professionals and advocates are urging transportation agencies to formally adopt the Safe Systems Pyramid.
Our panelists are Dr. Dave Ederer of the CDC, who developed the Pyramid, and Steph Leonard, who partners across state agencies in Colorado to implement the pyramid.
The Safe Systems Pyramid webinar learning objectives:
- Understand the Safe Systems Pyramid, and how it differs from the Safe Systems approach and the Three E’s of Engineering, Education and Enforcement.
- Understand what a public health and epidemiological approach in transportation safety is, and why it is appropriate
- Learn about opportunities to incorporate the Safe Systems Pyramid into professional or advocacy work, Including incorporating the Safe Systems Pyramid into a Safe Systems Approach, to prevent watering down of the Safe Systems Approach.
